Noah Centineo is an open book.

The hunky To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before star has previously discussed his sobriety, but is now looking back on the “dark time” in his life where there weren’t many drugs he “wouldn’t do.”

The 23-year-old has been sober since the day before his 21st birthday, but from 17 until that point, things were very different. In his new digital cover for Harper’s BAZAAR, the Netflix star explained:

“There’s a syndicate of, like, 500 to 1,000 kids in the entertainment industry that are all trying to make it right now that all they do Monday to Monday is party every night.”

But it wasn’t all house parties or champagne in the clubs, Centineo says. He and his friends’ favorite thing to do was to “take Molly and talk for five hours and like get to the bottom of some really deeply philosophical existential questions.”

Aside from Molly, there were other drugs he previously dabbled in:

“Everything. There wasn’t really much I wouldn’t do. I never, ever injected anything, which is good. I smoked a lot of things. I was really upset, man. It was a really dark time in my life.”

In the aftermath of his parents’ divorce when he was 15, he lived for a few months in a Florida hotel room with his mother:

“As the 15-year-old living in close quarters with my mom, I felt an obligation to step up and fill a role, fill a position that was vacant at that time, you know, and in doing so, I bristled and I kind of shoved down a lot of emotion.”

But eventually, he made his way to Los Angeles where he now lives with his sister, Taylor:

“I couch-surfed in the Valley and Hollywood for, like, four years.”

Today, he has sanity-keeping rituals which he abides by:

“I do a lot of freaking out. I like baths. I like meditation. I like journaling. I talk to myself a lot if I’m mad at something that I did. I’ll scream at myself, really, like, looking in the mirror, right? Like, in my room. Like, ‘Dude, like, stop, this is f**king unacceptable. You’re better than this!’ I hold myself very accountable, but I can talk myself off of ledges too. And that’s a strong thing.”

Aside from TATBILB 2, Alexis Ren‘s boyfriend noted what his wishes are for the future of his career:

“I want to do movies that f**k you up, cerebral films, the kind where you can’t sleep after.”

Mostly, it seems like he wants to enjoy fame without it going to his head. Noah reflected on his rise to fame following the rom-com’s initial release in August 2018:

“It’s more of a blessing than a curse. But ask me again in five years when maybe I’m boxed into it and can’t get out. If that’s my path, I might have a different answer for you, but at this point in time, I’m trying to enjoy every single moment of it.”
