John Cho’s new thriller ‘Searching’ is so 2018

The central gimmick of Searching – it’s a missing-person thriller played out entirely on smartphone and computer screens – might seem cheesy at first.

But it’s really just a fact of life in 2018.

A lot of us really do spend most of our waking hours staring at and interacting with screens of one kind or another.

In that regard, it’s not that weird for a story to be set on the internet. It’s weird there aren’t more stories told this way, the occasional Unfriended aside.

Anyway, though the approach is unusual, the actual concept of the film is pretty straightforward. It’s a mystery thriller with John Cho playing a concerned dad on the search for his missing daughter. Read more…
